Under the able guidance and coaching of Ed Cloutier, the first year students were very successful in all sports. The Frosh gridders enjoyed an undefeated, untied football season, sweeping aside six city opponents and two Canadian Rugby teams. The high light was a 25-12 win over a much heavier St. Patrick's team from across the harder. By virtue of this victory, the cubs became recognized as district High School leaders in their class. Paul Russ, Leo Lardie, and Jack Shay were outstanding. The basketball team boasted of thirteen players, well drilled in the fundamentals, and endowed with characteristic St. Mary's fight. Employing smart, aggressive tactics, Coach Cloutier's charges were one of the best teams of their class in the area. The yearlings garnered twenty-two wins while dropping seven decisions. The "Little Irish" won ten games in a row before being stopped by DeVeaux Reserves. The Columbian Squires split two games; Trott Freshmen were soundly trounced twice 38-17 and 24-13. St. Patrick's from over the river lost three games to the high flying Freshmen. The climax of these hardwood wars was a 36-21 decision over the DeVeaux Reserves at the time of their second meeting. Fred Feigenbaum, Eddie Michael, and Leo Lardie were the mainstays of the outfit, while Bob McCrone, Paul Russ, Andy Sciarrino and "Danno" Mahoney showed real promise. At this time, the baseball season has just begun; therefore the exploits of the baseball team are not recorded. However, the boys demonstrated great form by opening their schedule with a 16-6 thumping of the Elm-woods. "Levi" Geiser, lanky first baseman, Don Gallagher, Leo Lardie and Paul Russ are the backbone of the club. A word of thanks is tendered Father Killeen, for it was through his cooperative interests that these sports were made possible; also to Joe Miller, whose work and unselfish attention to his duties as Freshman Athletic Manager, were a big factor toward the success of the Freshman team. 57 |
