VARSITY BASKETBALL ¦ As usual, Coach Bernie Devers produced another smartly drilled, hard-fighting aggregation. The Blue and White was a constant thorn in the side of district scholastic quints; and, though the Irish lost more games than were won, we were never disgraced on the court, as most of the defeats were by a margin of less than six points. This year's St. Mary's quint, though not having as impressive a record as those in the past, nevertheless was the hardest fighting club to represent the school. Ill luck dogged the Blue and White all through the season in one form or another; and, coupled with the loss of three star players early in the season, success in the form of victories was lacking. However, the Saints were always classed as dangerous, and merited praise. St. Mary's, after a long period of intensive training, opened its season with a close 21-19 win over Lewiston High School, Niagara-Orleans League Champions. After starting the campaign in brilliant fashion, the Irish journeyed to Tonawanda High School and lost a tough one 24-22. St. Mary's led throughout, but a spirited Red and White rally in the last two minutes decided the issue. The third contest resulted in another loss as Canisius Prep edged us out 22-20. Shots of "Believe It or Not" kind proved our undoing. Returning to the Lyceum, scene of our court wars, St. Mary's were forced to drop another 54 |
