SCANNED TEXT: one to Tonawanda. Handicapped by lack of height, St. Mary's fought an uphill battle throughout to hold the winners in check, but a bad third quarter won for Tonawanda. Incidentally, Tonawanda won the District Scholastic Championship. Journeying to Buffalo we again tasted, defeat, this time to the powerful Canisius College Freshman outfit. The count was 33-18 but the game was hard fought. Ed Glass proved his worth to St. Mary's by handling the ball in a flawless manner and netting 10 of our team's total. As if to further gall us, St. Joe's buried us under an avalanche of baskets to win 48-26. The Maroon experienced one of those "on" nights to breeze through an easy win. Engaging the Niagara University yearlings, we were on the short end of a 30-27 score. Captain "Bud" Hayes was the outstanding man on the floor. Resolved to break into the win column, St. Mary's travelled to Williamsville to down a strong Neumann High team by a point, 28-27 being the final score. Having tasted victory the boys took a little trip to Wilson, and turned in a 32-24 win over the Orange and Black. Over-confidence proved our downfall as DeVeaux Academy, a city rival, registered a 29-24 victory over the Blue and White. With just the opposite feeling, St. Mary's went on down the river to the lair of the Lewiston -Rivermen" only to be soundly beaten 33-18. La Salle High School Explorers invaded the Lyceum in a gay mood but were sent home in tears as an aroused fighting Irish won 29-18. The Lyceum was packed and a great many were turned away. The fans were literally hanging from the rafters to see the game. St. Mary's made it two in a row with an impressive but easy victory over the Wilson High School 42-24. A few nights later, unable to hold a six-point lead going into the last period, St. Mary's were forced to bow to the Fresh of Niagara, the Eaglets winning 24-17. We next played host to Neumann High School but disappointed our guests by triumphing 38-31 in a fast game. St. Joseph's knocked at our doors two nights later but they too, were inhospitably treated. Smarting from a previous loss to the Maroons, St. Mary's stepped out and turned in a well earned 30-26 decision. Aware of our strength, Canisius Prep of Buffalo cancelled its game with the Marians because she wished to protect her undefeated record. In the next game, Canisius College Frosh had a hard time downing the Marians 36-27. Entered in the - City Scholastic Tournament, St. Mary's finished a poor fourth. Apparently afflicted with stage fright in the opening game, the Blue and White dropped a 28-14 count to Falls High. Unfortunately, in her second game, St. Mary's met an enraged Trott five and went down to defeat 36-21. St. Mary's engaged DeVeaux in the final game of the current season and walked off with a sensational 31-29 victory. The Cadets were hot in the initial half and everything they threw went in. As a result, they held a 24-7 decision at half time. Conceded little or no chance to cop a win, the Marians went into the second half determined at least to make a better showing. No one suspected what the outcome would be. First Hayes started popping "em;" then Doyle started; Mills took up where Doyle left off; Hayes showed Mills up and then Perez thought it time for him to act and, after Glass got through, St. Mary's held the verdict 31-29. Finishing the season in a blaze of glory, St. Mary's earned the plaudits of friend and foe alike and with a nucleus of Glass, Doyle, Mills and Perez to build around the Blue and White is expected to reach the pinnacle of success next season. 55 |
